Canada Study Permit 2026: Rules, Costs & Step by Step
How the Canadian study permit works in 2026: requirements, costs in CAD, working while you study and how to apply.
A Canadian study permit lets you study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — and can open the door to working during and after your studies. Here is what to know for 2026.
Before you apply
- Get a letter of acceptance from a DLI.
- Obtain a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) where required.
- Show proof of funds for tuition and living costs.
Costs in 2026 (CAD)
The study permit application is about $150, plus roughly $85 for biometrics. Plan for tuition (varies widely by program) and proof of funds for living expenses — currently $20,635 per year for a single applicant outside Quebec, in addition to tuition.
Working while you study
Eligible students can usually work a set number of hours per week off campus during the academic term and full-time during scheduled breaks. After graduating from an eligible program, you may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
Step by step
- Receive your acceptance letter and PAL/TAL if needed.
- Gather passport, proof of funds, and any required exams.
- Apply online through IRCC and pay the fees.
- Give biometrics; complete a medical exam if required.
- Travel with your acceptance letter and approval to receive your permit on arrival.
Rules and required documents can vary by country and program — confirm the official IRCC requirements for your case. Need help planning your move and settling in? The Daitana concierge supports newcomers every step of the way.
